In 1985, the world wasn't ready for Philip Michael Thomas' crossover from actor to singer. Riding the wave of fame that Miami Vice brought him, the Sparkle star released Living The Book of My Life and the 12" single, Just The Way I planned It on his own Spaceship Records. Long before Tracy Morgan, he wore an EGOT pendant, projecting his ambition to win an Emmy, a Grammy an Oscar and a Tony for his acting talent. Long before Deepak Chopra published his first book on spirituality, he was preaching the power of consciousness and speaking to the universe. The media went after his confidence as arrogance and Philip retreated away from show business, popping up occasionally fro the Psychic Friends Network and providing voiceovers for video games.
Perhaps he was a head of his time? MToday its commonplace to see artists exist as musicians, actors, comedians and producers. There is no media that challenges Donald Glover, Beyonce or Rihanna when they extend their creativity. But for a moment in time, it's hard to dispute that he was on top of the world he imagined for himself. Perhaps this LP (and Bruce Willis' The Return of Bruno) deserve a revisit by today's generation? Feel free to leave your comments.
